FROM MALAYA BUSINESS INSIGHT

Incidental Intelligence

PNoy’s buddy

Justice Bienvenido Reyes of the Court of Appeals will go to the Supreme Court to fill one of the two vacancies to be left this month by the retirement of Associate Justices Conchita Carpio Morales and Antonio Eduardo Nachura. In a straw vote by the justices of the Supreme Court, Reyes got 10. That should normally be considered as a sign of respect for the integrity and competence of Reyes.

The candidates in the top four in the straw votes are also all from the Court of Appeals. They are justices Jose Reyes, Noel Tijam and Magdangal de Leon. Based on academic excellence, the most qualified should be Estela Perlas Bernabe.

Ms. Bernabe was salutatorian of the Ateneo law class of 1976. But she is not as close to the President as Justice Bienvenido Reyes.

Reyes’ background

Many lawyers say that Justice Bienvenido Reyes is eminently qualified for the Supreme Court. He is possessed with honor and integrity and is well-lettered in the law. Setting all that aside, Justice Reyes is said to be a partner of the security agency of then citizen Benigno Simeon Cojuangco Aquino when his mother was president.

That is as good a qualification as any, considering the particular preference of the President to pick friends to serve his government.

Justice Reyes is an old friend of Len Oreta, husband of former senator Teresa Aquino Oreta, sister of the late Sen. Benigno Aquino.

We have to see the friendship of Justice Reyes with the family of President Aquino.

The main point to consider is he got 10 votes from the members of the Supreme Court.

TRIVIA 0018: WHO IS AL HAJJ MURAD EBRAHIM?

FROM THE WEBSITE OF GLOBAL JIHAD

Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim

Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim was born in 1950 in the Southern Philippines.

Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim was one semester short of completing his civil engineering degree at the Notre DameUniversityin CotabatoCity, at age 22, when he joined Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in 1972. Then, in 1981, Al-Hajj Murad moved to the more militant Moro Islamic Liberation Front – MILF.

Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim became with time vice chair for military affairs of the MILF under Hashim Salamat, head of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces and MILF peace panel chair from early 2001.

Al-Hajj Murad took over the leadership of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front –  MILF, after the death of his predecessor Hashim Salamat died from died from heart attack, on 07/13/2003. Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim suspended its guerilla and terror activity in order to give way for political negotiation.

In early June 2005, Al-Hajj Murad moved from the shade of the underground life to the public open life when he joined open negotiation with the Filipino regime in Sultan Kudarat, inSouthern Mindanao.

Today (03/2009) Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim is still negotiating peace on base of a large autonomy to the Muslims in Southern Philippines  with the Philippinesgovernment. Segments of MILF are still clashing, from time to time, with the Filipino army (see – MI.LF warning) but generally, the situation in theSouthernPhilippines is much more calm and stable then in the 90s’. Many recognize Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim as the real boss ofMindanao.

TRIVIA 0017: WHO IS JOSE NUNEZ JR.

TO THE POINT

BY EMIL JURADO

MANILA STANDARD TODAY

09 AUGUST 2011

But who is this Jose Nuñez Jr. who has sent a show-cause letter to some 20 senior managers of the bank?

I have never heard of any experience of Nuñez as a banker. Now, all of a sudden, he becomes the hitman of the Aquino administration against past officials and directors who were appointed by Mrs. Arroyo.

Nuñez was chief of staff of the youngest of the Zamora brothers, Salvador “Buddy” Zamora, who was a big contributor to the Aquino campaigning 2010. When payback time came, Nuñez got the plum post of DBP chairman.

This is clearly a witch hunt. The young lawyer Pinpin tragically became collateral damage. By the way, I have copies of those show-cause letters.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Nuñez and his cohorts want to link Ongpin and former DBP president Rey David to former First Gentleman Mike Arroyo.

Come to think of it, there was this complaint addressed to the Ombudsman and the  Bangko Sentral of the Philippines by DBP “Concerned DBP Employees and Officials” that Nuñez had violated the Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and BSP rules and regulations by utilizing the planes of his former boss, Buddy Zamora.

Zamora is also a client of the DBP with yet-unpaid loans yet unpaid (it would be interesting to find out why they have not been paid).

That complaint was even published in The Manila Standard Today. Whatever happened to it? We have not heard more about it. What is BSP Governor Amando Tetangco doing with that complaint, may I ask?
